It's in our nature to always place a beginning and an end to things, so 6,000 years ago the story of Adam and Eve was created to explain how we got here. I think that we humans just can't fathom a beginningless existence so that combined with a lack of answers was the basis of creationism.
Now 6,000 years later, science is starting to reveal the answers to our beginnings. We can't expect to find all the answers immediately, but we are well on our way to putting the puzzle together even if there are still some missing links as you pointed out.
