Yes, it would work; BTDT with a 1/4 diaphram compressor originally intended for airbrushing when the starter went out on my compressor and I was in the middle of painting a bus.
It's a factor of how long you're willing to wait, and will that poor little compressor survive the run time.
You could get an old propane tank - like the ones used to fuel a house - and turn that into your aux air tank. I've considered doing something similar, although my compressor is adequately-sized now, it would help out when I'm doing big jobs, like sanding or sandblasting.
