CIS mystery solved

For several months I was experiencing what appeared to be intermittent fuel starvation upon startup. Couldn't solve the problem and then last week the engine stopped completely as I was leaving an early morning meeting. I sat in the car for several minutes trying to determine whether to have the car towed.

As a last ditch effort, I opened the engine lid and took off the air cleaner and Voila! there was the problem! When the car had backfired it blew the "pop-off" valve completely out of it's opening.

I placed the "pop-off" valve back into the hole and the engine immediately fired up. On the way to the office I stopped by a hardware store and picked up some epoxy. Epoxied the pop-off valve back in. That was two weeks ago and I have since had no problems with startups. Who would have thought? The mysteries of CIS.
