As for being top heavy, after the initial introduction of the Smart, it had to be pulled from the market until Mercedes could retrofit the cars to prevent them from flipping too easily. A Scandinavian auto magazine was testing the car's collision avoidance ability (elk test) when they nearly flipped over.

Actually, the 'elk incident' wasn't with a smart - it was with an A-class. The solution was to equip all A-classes with ESP - Mercedes speak for a sophistocated traction control system.
