I think the planning/laisse faire thing is a valid point. Men and women come from different backgrounds on this. Women rolled out from under the hide in the morning to stir up the fire, feed the kids and grind grains for the evening meal. The man had left before the sun came up to hunt. The woman knew how much wood to put on the fire, how long to grind the grains, where the water would be, etc. The man might have to check out several places to find the meat. Not by the water hole. OK then, how about in that grove of trees? Maybe up that small valley. Men learned not to get too attached to whatever worked last time, and were always willing to try something else.
So, fast forward to the present. Meet me at Georgio's. She gets there, they're closed. He arrives there two minutes later, she's having a cow because "You should have known they would be closed on Monday nights." Hey, whats the big deal? Its just a landmark.
The corollary of this is the apparent contradiction, but closely related phenomenon of Shopping. The man goes out and gets what he needs. Hey! It was right there beside the water hole! I didn't even have to go down to the grove of trees! But for the woman, its about apparent choice. Those grains look so much tastier than these ones. Do you think this water tastes better? Don't you think this stick of wood would go well with the new fireplace rocks? The guy doesn't care. He's got something to eat, water to drink and he's warm. However, if he's smart, he'll smile and nod and maybe the best hunt of all will go on under the hides tonight!
