I recently bought my /80 coupe via an ad I saw in Ebay. I didn't purchase it through Ebay though the seller used it as an ad tool and I used it as a search tool. We both were successful. I used Ebay to advertise my own 914 that I was selling at the time and that worked as well. I had a fella fly down from SF to test drive it - he handed me the cash and drove it home. Simple as that.
I've tried autotrader online to sell two cars both unsuccessfully. The thing that really blows about the site is that you have no idea how many hits your ad is getting where as with Ebay at least you know that people are interested by the "watchers counter" and you certainly know that it is getting looked at by the hits counter. Those two tools alone let you know if you're at least getting an audience.
Of course - Pelican has a BBS page dedicated to the sale of porsches and I have used it as well to generate leads in my search. I also put my car up there but got little response for it. I've seen plenty of better luck on the board.
