Idle thoughts and trouble shooting
Greetings.
For those experiencing problems with their engine idle control
and/or reliability, I've gained some experience that I would
like to share.
With my newly purchased 82 911SC, and after having a lot
of work done on the motor, I had a problem where:
1) The idle would run up and down on a warm start.
2) I had no idle at all at high elevation (Mount Wilson) +- 7000
This problem eventually evolved to no idle on a warm start.
This problem, it was discovered, was related directly to
having a poor electical contact to my fuel pressure regulator.
Seems, without fuel pressure regulation, the car would drive,
but it would idle poorly.
I learned that fuel system maintenance is a seasonal issue
with these cars, where a constant adjustment will be required
as the weather (atmospheric pressure) changes.
So, fuel pressure control is found to be as critical a fuel
mixture control. I've yet to see results of my repair at high
altitude.
