Boosting 2.7 Performance

I'm in the process of having my 2.7 rebuilt Everything I've read so far states that CIS Fuel injection is basicly bullet proof, but that carbs are the only way to acheive a substancial HP gain above that achieved by backdating the exhaust.
The engine is torn down and I'm debating between a standard "stock" rebuild" or going more agressive: cams, head porting, carbs. ect. This car won't be an everyday driver...but isn't intended to be a pure track car either. Would moving away from CIS be a mistake regarding reliability ? Are there aftermarket fuel injections systems in the 2K price range that would offer me the same HP benifits ? I've considered upgrading to a 3.0 or 3.2, but i felt i could build my 2.7 to meet or exceed the HP of these engines for the same $$...or less. then buying a $4500 used 3.0 or 3.2 and be faced with a rebuild anyway.
Any insight is appreciated !
