I would try a shotgun approach at first....try all the major galleries / promient ones...show the work, the track record, and see if they will give a show....What you need is that first gallery to open the door...the more prestigious the better.
I know a woman that has bought the estate of a dead artist that had some auction records, some major shows while alive. She even wrote a book on him and had it published...and just being associated with her is to know it is a tough business to break into..
As a art collector I mostly deal with dead artists....the value of an artists work is generally what his works sell for at auction.
