Yes, it's not easy to lose a pet. Pets are family, no matter what some say, nothing can change the bond/love between this member of the family and you.
Perhaps he'll be fine after surgery. It's a possibility this tumor is benign, and that he will be just fine after surgery. He's still relatively young, I had a cat that lived to 18 years.
