I installed an MSD on my 87 about 3 months ago. It was easy to install and I have had good success. It makes the car start easier, idle better, and eliminated the slight flat spots around 3-4500 rpms. I think that it helped top end as well and seems to pull strong from 4000 now rather than 4500. BE CAREFUL THOUGH. in the Haynes manual is says that some of the earlier 911's (pre-dme) already had captive discharge ignitions from the factory. If this is the case with yours, you cannot use either system. (maybe that is why people are recommending staying w/ stock?).
My neighbor also put it on his 88 rx-7 and has seen excellent results.
