I figured he pulled his gun by the way he was holding his hands, and shot rubber bullets at him, the same way they use them for crowd control. That or salt bullets, the type that disentegrate upon impact, but hurt like a bastard.
If it was a real gun, he would have been thrown back and the cop would have been in deep **** for really shooting an unarmed person in the back.

The cop is useing the sort of taser that is shaped like a fat gun and fires a set of little darts with wires attached into the target (person). then pulling the trigger sends a charge down the wire.
Rubber bullets would make the guy recoil from the pain rather than lockup with a muscle spasim. rubber bullets are also fired by normal guns and would have made a lot of noise.
IMHO a taser like this is one of the better ways for a lone officer to subdue a violent (resisting) person without getting in striking range of the person.
oh, and someone previously said 'why didn't he call for backup?'. he did, you can see the cop talk into his mic on his sholder before the taser came out. backup will take time which is something the cop didn't have.
as far as tasering childeren goes, i don't agree with that but a drunk person can generate a lot of strength and cause a lot of damage when they don't feel the pain.
