This thread can go one way or the other real quick!
I have a BA in philosophy, a BS in chemistry and a masters in chemical engineering. I can see the need for all that I have studied even though I may not "use" it on a daily basis.

I am sure the higher educational system down under is very good. Focusing in on a particular discipline is always going to make you successful to a point. Much can be said for a well rounded education that not only prepares you for a profession but also enriches your life. The study of philosophy or poetry may not have a direct impact on your wallet but it will enrich and help train your brain to look at various points of view. In the states, some of the better universities require so many hours and in a variety of subject matter - these are the schools that students from all over the world are looking to get into and they are also the schools that are making the greatest contributions as well.
