When your stopped, as you release the clutch, it should engage 1st gear smoothly, allowing an easy smooth start up. When a clutch chatters, it engages with what could be described as a quick series of short grabs and is much more difficult to control. It can be caused by worn, damaged or oil soaked clutch parts, or by problems in the engine/transmission mounts.

I never was good at prose in school, I hope that description makes sense.
