I bet this is overlooked many times, thats why some engines smoke more - some less - during startup.

In reality, the oil rings rotate in their bores over many miles - I like to tell people to start them in the up direction, as it will at least minimize the effect until they start to rotate significantly.
Too bad about your 2.7 - I hope that Mike wasn't involved...
