When I asked this question of BMWNA I was told that Mobil1 is one of the synthetic oils approved by BMW. (Castrol synthetic is another, BTW)
My 99 528i calls for 5W-30, and unless you have an M5 made before 3/2000, the V8 is the same. Your owners manual should also specify the correct viscosity.
BTW I will be switching from the BMW synthetic (made by Castrol) to Mobil1 at my next change. Mostly because I don't like the amount of brown waxy stuff building up inside the engine. Which I DON'T get on my three other "toys"! All which run Mobil1.
