My mother (now in her 70's) assures me that this was the way she was taught, not only at home but in public school. Her "position" in life was to see to the "needs" of her family and her husband was part of the family.
As an aside to this she was telling me that being the wife of an Army officer she had a "handbook" (an official U.S. Army publication) of how to be a proper Officers wife. And she followed it with out hesitation.
Times sure have changed. My parents were happy in their marrage and stayed best friends untill my father passed.
