Try as we may, we can really only think of one thing at a time. If you tie up "X" amount of time concentrating on a card game or a class assignment - that is time not spent in quiet contemplation. That was the reasoning I grew up with as to why to go to Church, "at least your not out bust'n windows for that hour a week!" Sounds silly, but the old man had us ballz - 7 straight - to the wall from 4th grade on through past college - no time to feel bad or get into too much trouble. Of course, that also lead to stress of another nature but that was managable.
