Stuff needs to make sense. I'm not suggesting gubmint is always good and right. But I am suggesting that much of what it tries to do is good and/or necessary. And I am also suggesting that, since we own it, perhaps we should make sure it runs right. And stop assuming our representatives are handling the job like we want.

I grew up around rivers and lakes, and one big lake is becoming quite a destination spot. Coeur d'Alene Lake is like Heaven on Earth in the late summer. The water is nearly as blue as Tahoe, or The Carribean. The mountains are green green. Water is perfect. Lake is huge. Unfortunately, some of the families living there are having to sell because they cannot afford the taxes. Some of these properties are 4th generation homesteads. Now worth perhaps millions.

So the bad news is that they have to move. Maybe. Unless they can subdivide or find some other solution. And the homestead, a matter of family hertitage, will be lost or subdivided or something. That's unfortunate. But there's another angle too. Some folks have a difficult time shedding tears for a family that came into ownership of a property for free, and now is forced to cash in on the $2M. Cry me a river. The reason taxes are high is because value is high. So when our business volume is $2M and we have to pay $50K in taxes, we whine about the taxes.

Still while it is properly challenging for even an energetic and awake business person to make a buck, government influence, like taxes, should not close the door of opportunity. Again, we own government, and so it's up to us to make it work properly. If it's not, then take a closer look at your elected representatives.
