While my dog was just a puppy, I started getting reports of her being seen roaming around the neighbourhood. She was always in the yard or in the house when we got home however. Turns out she would climb over the chainlink part of our fence in the backyard at will, then climb back into the yard before we got home.
I thought about an electric fence, but didn't like the collars much. Instead I built a 2 foot extension to the current fence in the back yard which wouldn't have fazed her at all except for the fact that it was overhanging by 20-30 degrees. Worked perfectly while we lived there.
Most people have good luck with an electric fence but I have a friend who's two dogs too it as a challenge and would sprint for the electic barrier and keep right on going until they were out of range.
