A Sebastopol man shot and wounded one of two men who broke into his house early Thursday morning, apparently to steal his medical marijuana, authorities said.

Kit Hartwell told Sonoma County sheriff's deputies that he fired a shotgun at a man who climbed through a bathroom window.

Alesandro Altizen, 22, of Santa Rosa was arrested after he sought treatment at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital a short time later.

Altizen underwent surgery for a wound to his right shoulder, authorities said.

Also arrested was David Daniel, a 23-year-old Santa Rosa man who accompanied Altizen to the hospital.

Investigators said they believe Altizen and Daniel were trying to break into Hartwell's Whited Road home to steal marijuana plants.

About 30 plants are growing at the home, according to sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Freitas said Hartwell has a physician's permission to use marijuana for medical reasons.

He said Hartwell wouldn't face any criminal charges in connection with the shooting.

No one answered the door Thursday at Hartwell's house.

A Porsche and three other cars were parked in the driveway.

Neighbors said they knew little about Hartwell, who has lived in the tan, single-story house for about two years.

Hartwell called 911 at about 3:15 a.m. Thursday to report the break-in and shooting.

He told investigators that the man who climbed through his window was armed with a rifle or shotgun.

Authorities wouldn't say if they recovered a weapon, but deputies were seen searching alongside Highway 12 between Sebastopol and Santa Rosa throughout the day Thursday.

Altizen, who remained hospitalized, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Daniel was booked in Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery and was being held on $30,000 bail.

It was the second home-invasion robbery this week in Sonoma County attributed to medical marijuana.

On Sunday, Santa Rosa police said four men forced their way into a North Street apartment and took marijuana from the occupants.

Freitas said there have been "multiple cases" of similar robberies in the past year.

On Whited Road, a neighbor who wouldn't give her name said one of Hartwell's roommates told her there was another attempted robbery six to seven months ago.

"Somebody was trying to break in and they scared them off," the neighbor said. "They ran up through the property past our house."

Some neighbors complained, but Bill Jackson, another neighbor who recently sold his house down the street, said Hartwell "seems like a nice guy."
