I disagree. I really liked it and found it to be as stable on the road/highway as my a6 wagon I drive now. The gas situation I don't really remember as I had it from 96-99 and I don't remember gas being as pricey and/or me worried about it (I am now, almost $40 a fill up...ouch!). For me it wasn't so much the offroading, which we only did a few times while camping but also the towing ability on that thing. It was incredible. We were once towing motorcycles and I literally forgot they were there. The handling was so unaffected that I just spaced and took a corner too fast (needed a new clutch lever on my virago after that).
Cons: If you're over 6 feet you are BUMMING. Seat doesn't accomodate anyone taller, it just doesn't go back any further. Rust, the hinges and tailgate rust easily. Replaced on extended warranty but PITA to go and have it done etc.
anyway, just my 2 cents. I liked it.
