Let me add a few numbers to the equation here, just so everyone knows what is what.
I am active duty Air Force, and I pay $16.25 a month for SGLI (insurance). If I die on active duty, my wife recieves $250,000. For 6.00 a month, I have (I think) $15k insurance on my family members, no matter how many there are.
Also note, there is a lower priced option for $125K for members who choose. Everyone in the military is defaulted into the SGLI program, you must discontinue it if you pick up other insurance and do not want it.
So... from my perspective, doubling the 6k to 12k? No biggie. Nice, yes, but if it didn't happen... so be it. It's not like that is all a military family recieves.
