If what you're talking about is one of those Modine-type hanging propane heaters with a big fan, they work great. They're relatively safe up high, and really blast some heat.
In my own shop-unisulated 24x30 metal bldg on a slab-I use a torpedo heater run on fuel oil-because it was cheap. Its loud, and I need to be anal about fuel leaks etc, but it works great.
