I second the above!! If $4K is the budget, Look into late 80's to '91 BMW e30's (3-series) Opt for the six /5spd and look for I's or IS models. The 'IS' is the top-o-line option; leather, sport suspension, lower ride height, posi rear, etc. Rock solid, 250K with basic maintenance, safe and last but certainly not least is they still look cool!!
The market on these car is very friendly. You should be able to purchase a late 325I or IS under 150K miles, nice condition and still have some cake left over..
