I'd say you're thinking clearly on that. A U-joint would be very speed dependent.
When bearings go, not only do they make noise, but the gears don't mesh as they should . . . all kinds of noises happen.
Also, i've had a clutch pressure-plate be responsible for vibrating/hammering noises at rev's.
