the trunk closed normally (w/o force) once i held the latch up. i think i have figured it out actually......the wax might have gotten down into the latch mechanism somehow and caused it to droop slightly when it is open which causes my problem.....fact was that i was trying to close the trunk lid ON the latch not underneath it.

EDIT: oh yeah...thanks for the reply and the struts are brand new so i knew it wasn't them....
