drifting is faster then normel driving if done right. Thats how the drift king keichi something became known as the drift king. He drifted in normal races in japan and would win by sliding through the turns. He didnt drift the whole course or get insanely sideways but he did drift. A show drift is different from a racedrift. You can beat guys in autox with drifting.
