Keichi did it and won races thats proof right there. Once again im not talking about drifting like you see it in the d1. There is a difference between a race drift and a show drift.
Sorry dude, but you're wrong. Step away from the Initial-D videos, and put down the controller for the GT-4 PS2 game. Drifting a 240SX at an indicated 60mph is probably slower around a corner than driving it with milder slip angles at 40mph. Don't forget, when you're drifting, your wheels are spinning faster than the car is actually travelling, AND much of your momentum is not FORWARD but sideways. That said, even if you can turn a faster lap by wild drifting, by the 2nd or 3rd lap, you'll need to come into the pits for a change of tires! When you consider that most races are longer than 2-3 laps, then you can understand how drifting doesn't cut it in racing.

Oh, one more thing - there is no such thing as 'race drift,' IMHO. HOWEVER, there is such a thing as slip angles. Most of the performance driving books agree that for most cars and tire compounds, somewhere around a 10 degree slip angle is optimal for gonig around a corner. This is true of even F1 type cars.

Slip angle defined: the difference between the direction which the wheels are pointed and the direction the car is travelling. There is a specific slip angle for each wheel as well as the entire car, BTW.
