Yeah, it's kind of ashamed that as an adult male you have to be paranoid when a kid might say hello at a store, restaraunt or elsewhere. I love kids but It's understandable that parents are suspicious with a stranger....hell I'm very protective with my daughter.
In any case, is the daycare teacher ever alone with the kids? Are there other adults around when he's with the kids? Background check research is also a great idea. Ask for a summary and research the service they use to run the check.
For the most part I agree with the "follow your instint" advice.
