Interesting story and had not heard about it. Consider if this had been allowed to continue?
After being through years of war to return to your home town and find it worse than the countries you liberated, most people would have felt the same way and acted the way that they did. Glad it turned out in a positive way.
Had to laugh though at the statement "the rifles were cleaned and returned to the Armory before morning"... typical GI's, they were taugh well.
