In New York, the brown rat (
Rattus norvegicus) has killed off the black or "ship" rat (
Rattus rattus) and the roof or Alexandrian rat (
Rattus rattus alexandrinus) by systematic attacks and sheer population growth. Usually they kill by biting the throat, or clawing their victims to death. Then, if hungry, they eat what they've just killed.
So, at least you're not a ship or roof rat; that would definitely be something to be pissed about.
