On a 83, you need the adapter board and the chip, and there is some soldering involved (not too hard)... just make sure that you have a 83 DME before you start. I ordered the adapter board for my car because i assumed that my 83 car has a 83 DME... but nope, somewhere along the line I ended up with a 86 DME.
