I guess I'll have to find another conservative to hate. You occasionally make too much sense, JP.

I'd say our new member, Steve, falls into the category of an informed, rational and respectful conservative (unlike myself, of course). Techweenie was like that also.

Crackpots are everywhere, including both liberalism and conservatism. I kinda cringe at them, but I also kinda respect their passion as long as they don't go over the top. Indeed, some posts on the nearby thread related to removing folks from a presidential audience because of what they might do, made me want to fly right off the handle. Just because I can. This is, after all, America. The idea that someone has to talk softly and begin each sentence with "Yes, that is an excellent point you just made and I would add that it is very different from mine due to the following observations...." is just not true. I like respectful people too, but respect is not a necessary condition to speech freedom. Not in my country. If someone wants to say something in an obnoxious fashion.......

And besides. While all you cons disagree with most of the way I think, I can report to you something you already know if you've thought about it. Liberals are passionate about these subjects. They really don't want to accept a decision that sounds like "Well, I'd like to be concerned about the environment, but those concerns just get in the way of making money, so I think we will just continue to trash the environment and leave it up to the next generation to fix." If 51% of society were to make that decision and impose it as national policy, some liberals would not just go away and be quiet in defeat. They'd wage a war on the enemies of the environment. Call them lawbreakers. Call them liberals. Call them anything you wish. Point out that their actions are not the will of the majority. They honestly believe that the survival of a species of animals is not something we can decide to deny because we prefer the benefits of the industrial actions that are causing the extinctions.

Yep, libs are passionate. Maybe they think they have some important issues to address, whether corporations and their lemming supporters like it or not. Like the pro-ANWR drilling poster says:

"How many species do you really need?"
