Even on laptop, you can partition the single physical drive into two logical drives, use one for OS and one for data. I also keep a copy of the Windows install CD, all special driver files, the install files for applications (e.g. if I downloaded Firefox etc) on the data partition. That way I can boot into DOS and reinstall the OS and all apps.
