The Founders of the country felt that guns in the hands of the people limit the power of the government...they ascribed to power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely...so in effect guns in the hands of the people keep governments honest...
I think one of the key things to remember when thinking about the founders intent is the fact that the British Army was marcing on Lexington and Concord to DISARM a local Militia that in their (The British) view was an illegal, adhoc group.
