Spent about 10 days there a couple of years ago.
Stayed on Ambergris Caye (pronounced key).
No need to see the cities - the resort areas are very small and not built up like the mexican hot spots. Very quiet and peaceful. No cars allowed on Ambergris - just golf carts and bikes.
Very expensive for 3rd world - similar to Hawaii pricing. Government Beer costing near the $4/bottle range.
If you can swing it - head on down to the isle of Roatan Honduras. Very inexpensive with West Bay Beach being one of the nicest white sand beaches I have seen. Beers will run you about $.65 - delivered to your door by the local beer truck.
