I was in London almost 2 years ago and stayed at the Royal Lancaster Hotel. Not too far from the tube and also near many of the parks. If you are going to be traveling the tube and sightseeing, look into getting a London Pass, this will cover all of your tube travel and much of your sightseeing expenses and you don't have to wait in tourist lines with this pass. The hotel if I remember correctly was right across from the Kensington Gardens.
