WAILUKU – Even though she was staying in a lava tube on public land, Karen Mayfield had a right to privacy, her attorney said.

Borge said he looked down a hole that resembled a “skylight” in the ceiling of the lava tube, seeing wind chimes and shelves. Over a ridge, he saw a makeshift toilet seat, a bird cage and a trail of carpet pieces leading into the lava tube.

Inside, he saw more carpet, a bed with a teddy bear, storage bins, shelves, pillows, a rebel flag, a kitchen area with food and a cactus.

While her court case is pending, Mayfield said she isn’t allowed to stay in the lava tube.

“I really miss it out there,” she said. “I really prefer living an alternate lifestyle where I can hear the wind blow and see the stars at night.”

It was the flag, that darn flag did her in.
