Robber dies in Spur shoot-out
23/05/2005 22:11 - (SA)
Cape Town - A member of Gordon's Bay police shot a robber dead after three armed men burst into the Sunset Bay Spur on Sunday night and robbed the cashiers, little realising five cops were eating there.
In what has been described as a heroic deed the lives of many customers were saved by the five officers.
Reports state that the children in the restaurant's play area were taken to a storeroom. Customers were warned to lie flat on the floor.
Superintendent Billy Jones, a police spokesperson, said the robbery happened about 21:30.
"The police were in their uniforms and on duty."
Jones said one of the police had seen three armed men holding up a staff member at the cash register.
"The robbers shot at a police officer, who returned fire and fatally wounded one robber in the back," said Jones.
The other two men ran away, still firing. Two people were wounded in the shooting.
A student constable of the Gordon's Bay police who came to the officers aid, was shot in the leg and a 25-year-old resident of the town was wounded in his left side.
Jones said: "The constable is in a stable condition in hospital. The other man was treated at the steakhouse."
The two suspects fled in a brown Charade, with an undisclosed amount of cash. This vehicle was later found about a kilometre from the restaurant.
The men swopped cars and took off in a white Volkswagen Jetta which was near the steakhouse.
A 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning about 02:30 by members of the town police and a white Jetta was seized in Khayelitsha. A third suspect is still being sought.
Pierre van Tonder, group managing director of the Spur Group, said on Sunday they were thankful that no customers or staff had been seriously wounded.
