From what I can find, the only asbestos used in exhaust systems in the last 50 years or so was the gaskets. Muffler packing is usually fiberglass or steel.
If you're worried about it, wear a good dust/particulate mask while working on it. The only real danger is from inhalation of asbestos particles (and most historical cases of mesothelioma occurred in people with years of continual exposure).
