It wasn't a "job" you lost .....it was a 'gig." . . .it's the nature of "Contracting." The whole reason businesses hire people on contract, is so they can cut them loose w/o drama.
Thing is, I do contract work as well (own my own seat of SWx, among other stuff, too). But, I don't complain when a project is over. Finishing a project is what it's all about. ANd, the people paying the bill have ZERO obligation to keep you fed with more projects.
No doubt you were getting paid more than any of the "employee designers" . . .and for five years! More money/less security. . .that's the trade-off.
It's like you just made a coast to coast trip, averaging 95mph .... and your complaining that you got one ticket and a flat tire along the way.
