They are great dogs. They key is to find an adult dog that you can get in front of the kids and see if there's a synergy with them and the family. Cow dogs in general have to be walked and played with quite a bit. They really want to work. We are pretty fortunate that these 2 are fairly low energy and enjoy long naps.
There are Aussie and Border rescue websites that have local chapters nationwide. These dogs are really entertaining to watch cuz they tend to stay young at heart. Good luck!
