I had a '77 for a while, as a 3rd car, along w/ an'86 951 and an '83 Scirocco gt (1.8 ltr). My '77 had the high compression eurospec motor and it was still underpowered, I feel bad for those of you w/ the stock 2.0! The other problem is that the early 924s are severly underbraked, wimpy crappy front brakes w/ solid rotors and bug style rear drums. Mine never got very good mileage, low to mid 20s, and although it had always been well maintained it still required much higher maintenance than my 951.
The 924 would be a classic had it been badged a vw, but then we wouldn't have seen all the models through the 968 (but, why not I guess?).
My stock '83 Scirocco was a quicker car (and would probably beat the 924 in every race other than top speed), but sometimes the 924 would surprise me; I was driving up the steepest part of Snoqualmie pass heading East and just held the gas down in 4th, it smoothly and easily accellerated up to 90 on a very steep hill.
Nowadays, you can get 944s for so cheap, what's the point of buying an old 924?
