I saw the episode but I can assure you with direct authority that it does mess an engine up. I didn't think it would have because the sugar would not be soluable in gas but the guy it happened to did have a very varnished carb. It didn't mess up the engine in the show, than again I think they used a Chevy small block 8 which seemed pretty bullet proof.
A banana in the tail pipe (if a tight fit) also will stall the car - but I think it really depends on the car. My son once jammed a tennis ball in the tail pipe, car would even start.
