The one I took was only a medium sized male. Roughly a 1-1.25" legspan. I've found them as big as 2" legspan in the house. It's practically the only house spider we have.
The recluse is dangerous, but I wouldn't classify it as the 2nd. I think that Austrailia owns 1-5 on any list like that, do a search for the Sydney Funnelweb.
I believe the Funnelweb and the Blackwidow have been documented as actually killing people, but there are no confirmed reports of a fatality from a Recluse bite. The Recluse bite, although not deadly, is about the most damaging and painful bites you can receive.
