Absolutely do not ever use straight cut gears on a street car. They are unbearable.
When I was picking gears for my gearbox, my trans part supplier veto'd my pics for 2 gears because the ratios I picked had a lot less helix angle than stock. He said they would be way too noisy compared to the gears I eventually used. Even though the ratios of what I have are not quite what I wanted, I am very glad I received this experienced advice. And those were helical gears he recommended against!
Straight cut for reverse and first are ok because you don't spend any time in those gears.
