It all comes down to one thing....

CIS (and everything that was changed as a result of it).
That being said, without CIS, the 911 would have gone away as a result of pollution controls, and as a result there wouldn't be anywhere near as many contributors to this BBS. So while I prefer to drive 911's without CIS, the realist in me has to admit that it was an acceptable form of "life support" until the advent of EFI, vario ram, 4-valve heads and all of that other stuff that made 911's sporty (but not as noisy) again.
