Hugh - you don't need to spend the $$ on a new box. Just backup any files you've created (docs, pics, etc) and wipe the drive and install XP. Only cost is the copy of XP....
If you do decide to buy a new box, and aren't tied to Windows for a particular application, seriously consider a Mac. (I don't expect you to dive into using Linux). 99.9% of your spyware and virus worries will go away.
