The AWD system in the regular WRX is much less sophisticated than the STI. Basically, it's a fairly sloppy viscous coupling in the center and rear with an open front diff. The reaction time of the VCs is pretty slow, but once you get the wheels spinning they lock up OK. Also, the regular WRX has an ABS system that is known to be slow to recover once actuated.
